In case you missed it, this is a great article by Trevor Nace published in Forbes, about the Ocean Cleanup technology trial underway, with a goal to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. When combined with a global push to reduce the use of single use plastics and increase recycling, the outlook for our oceans and ecosystem has just got a little better.
The World Economic Forum has predicted that by 2050 our oceans are expected to contain more plastic than fish. So, it is really exciting that science has joined forces with business leaders to turn around this environmental disaster.
In September 2018 Ocean Cleanup (www.theoceancleanup.com) commenced its System 001 trial of new technology to clean up our oceans by extracting plastic and waste. Commencing in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Francisco the trial is focusing on evaluating the technology, fine tuning /improving and expanding the system. Following a successful trial, the Ocean Cleanup technology the next stage will focus on deploying the system into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with a goal of reducing its size by 90% by 2040.
Ocean Cleanup is a not for profit company backed by tech heavy weights Peter Thiel, Co-Founder of PayPal and Marc Benioff, CE of Salesforce.com.
